LET'S TALK TURKEY
They say you are what you eat, so be careful this Thanksgiving. While turkey may be delicious, it isn’t exactly the most desirable bird to resemble. Unfortunately, abstaining from turkey won’t prevent the dreaded “turkey neck”, that wattle-like appearance caused by sagging skin and shifting fat deposits…
A facelift lifts and tightens the skin and underlying tissue throughout the lower face and neck, reducing jowls and refining the jaw line. The platysmal bands (those muscles that have started to protrude in your throat area) are tightened, firming the neck and giving it a smooth appearance. Incisions are made behind your hairline, around the ear, and possibly in the crease beneath your chin. The skin of the neck and of the cheek is lifted, the underlying connective tissue is repositioned, and excess skin is removed. There may also be fat removal in the neck (liposuction) if it's called for.
Some women develop extensive skin hanging, or a turkey wattle, before their faces develop jowls and muscle laxity. If you are one of these women, we can perform an abbreviated procedure that focuses on the neck exclusively. Younger patients may get away with an even lighter procedure that just tightens sagging skin and protruding neck muscles.
After the incisions are closed, a light dressing is applied. These surgeries are done as outpatient procedures, so you get to go home on the same day as the surgery. Depending on the extent of the surgery you will need someone to drive you home. You'll be back to normal—and able to work—usually within a week to 10 days.
Since most people don't see themselves accurately, you can only find out which procedure(s) you need by coming in for a consultation. So if your neck is starting to affect your happiness about your looks, let us examine the situation and tell you what can be done.
Don't give up on being beautiful because of this localized problem.

KEEPING THE "MED" IN MEDSPA
It started with Botox parties in people's homes. Then so-called MedSpas began to pop up in shopping malls and beauty salons. These combined low-impact medical cosmetic procedures with day spa services. While these trends made the latest and greatest rejuvenation treatments accessible to more and more people, one crucial consideration was often overlooked: patient safety.
The truth is, treatments in these non-traditional settings are often administered by people with no medical training. Worse yet, often there's no doctor on-site to oversee the "technicians" handling the MedSpa's laser hand-pieces, needles and other equipment, and federal law does not require that the doctor sponsoring the MedSpa be present during operating hours…
What's gotten lost in the hype is this: many elective rejuvenation treatments are, in fact, medical procedures. They should only be performed under the care of properly trained and credentialed medical professionals.
You simply can't learn enough about facial anatomy, skin chemistry and the other disciplines required to understand facial skin rejuvenation at a weekend seminar (or by watching your boss administer treatments for a few months). Whenever cellular structure is altered (and that's what real skin rejuvenation requires—altering cellular structure), skill and knowledge are needed to anticipate outcomes.
When I set out to rejuvenate your face, I imagine how your dermal structure will be affected by all of the tools I have available to me. I come up with a plan. Then I apply these tools in a unique combination that addresses your particular facial type, skin type, aging issues, etc. When it comes to the long-term care of your skin, there's simply no comparison between that and ordering a la carte at a MedSpa.
There are certain services we offer as part of my practice that are performed by members of my staff. They are fully trained and qualified to perform these procedures (see article below). But rest assured that if you have a question and want to talk with me, I'm always here. So while we offer MedSpa services, this is—first and foremost—a medical practice.
