More Comfort,
Better Results with Our Palomar StarLux
We're Now Using The Most Advanced Intense
Pulsed Light for Hair And Vein Removal
Our
patients have been delighted with the results they're getting from
our new Palomar StarLux, which we introduced last month. Skin rejuvenation
treatments have been more comfortable and effective, and now we've
started using the StarLux for hair and vein removal.
Hair Removal
Pulsed Light hair removal works by emitting pulses of intense light
into the hair follicles. The light is absorbed by the pigment in
the follicles and converted to heat. The heat then loosens the hair
and disables the cells responsible for growing new hair.
Treating Large Areas is Easy
We've got a wide beam handpiece that's excellent for treating larger
areas such as the back, shoulders, arms and legs. Best of all, IPL
treatments are safe, fast, gentle and effective.
What are the benefits of IPL hair removal?
- Larger areas may be treated at one time.
- It works equally well with light or dark hair and skin.
- There is less chance for scarring and pigmentation change.
- Less pain and discomfort compared to other hair removal treatments.
- IPL is effective on almost any area of the body where smoother,
younger-looking hair-free skin is desired.

How many treatments will I need?
This depends on the area you wish to have treated, the hair density
and your hair's growth cycle.
Your hair grows in cycles and many factors influence its growth.
Age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication and metabolism
all play a part in your hair's location, thickness and resilience.
IPL slows the growing capacity of follicles in the growth cycle
at the time of the treatment. Since some hair follicles may enter
their growth cycle after your treatment, three or four treatments
may be required to deliver optimal results.
Note: Removing hair does not make it grow back thicker, darker
or quicker.
That's a myth. The opposite is usually the case. IPL treatments
may cause hair to come back slower and thinner.
How does the IPL process differ from Laser
Hair Removal?
IPL works equally well on most skin pigmentations, without removing
any of the pigment. IPL hair removal can also safely and effectively
eliminate hair of all colors: blond, red, brown, black and even
white.
With the IPL process, we can gently treat hair in sensitive areas
such as the lip or nipples while maintaining a healthy, normal appearance
of the surrounding tissue.
How long do the treatments last?
Treatments can last from a few minutes to a few hours depending
on the size of the area being treated. IPL hair removal treatments
are relatively painless, yet effective.
Following treatment
After your treatment, the area is cleansed and you can return to
your normal activities immediately. We insist you use sunscreen
on any treated areas exposed to the sun.
There is no down time in the sense of a recuperation period. You
can return to your regular activities immediately after treatment.
IPL for Vein Removal
Our Palomar StarLux provides safe and effective removal of spider
veins. Spider veins, or telangiectasias, are those small, red, blue
or purple blood vessels that appear most frequently on the face
and thighs.

How does it work?
Light energy is delivered through a special handpiece with filters
to the targeted vein, in a series of short and/or long pulses. The
light energy is absorbed by the blood vessels. This heat absorption
causes a thermocoagulation (clogging) of the blood vessel, and a
gradual absorption by the body.
Will IPL therapy work on my veins?
Prior to treatment we'll review your medical history to determine
how long you have had a problem with your veins and the severity
of the problem. We need to determine your skin type, and we'll ask
whether you've sought prior treatment on your veins. If there appears
to be an underlying abnormality, further testing may be advised
prior to your light therapy.
What are the treatments like?
Most light therapy patients report little if any discomfort. Some
experience a transient, mild burning sensation.
How many treatments will I need?
Significant improvement is realized in most cases with one or two
treatments. The potential for maximum long-term resolution increases
after an additional one or two treatments.
However, new veins may occur and additional treatments are generally
required for optimum results. These treatments may be in three to
four week intervals.
What is recovery like?
You may be asked to wear special support hose to help keep pressure
on the veins. This will help to keep the veins closed.
Bruises around the treated areas usually disappear after the first
week. Blistering and scabbing are unusual. A tan or brownish pigment
may persist for a few weeks when larger veins are involved. While
each vein may require several pulses, most disappear in two to six
weeks.
Keys to success with light leg vein therapy include the short-term
use of compression stockings, and the avoidance of hot baths and
strenuous exercise.
Although your final results may not be apparent for several months,
you'll see immediate changes. Most of our patients are thrilled
to see how their legs look without unsightly red and blue lines.
Light-Based Therapy is a Dream Come True
IPL is so much gentler than traditional lasers! If you haven't yet
tried hair or vein removal because friends told you "It hurts!"
or "It's not permanent!," forget what you've heard. That's the past.
We're looking at a whole new situation with the Palomar StarLux.
Cliches aside, it really is "new" and "improved."
